Gastropexy
Preventative surgery for large chested dogs.
At Altitude Veterinary Hospital, gastropexy is offered as an optional procedure for canine breed types with a deep or “barreled” chest and abdomen, who are predisposed to Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), or “twisted gut.” GDV is a life-threatening emergency when it does occur. Once a GDV occurs, the chest and abdomen become swollen or bloated, and the blood supply to the stomach is cut off, resulting in potential tissue death.
Gastropexy is a preventative surgical procedure where part of the stomach is attached to the body wall (rib), which keeps the stomach from being able to twist within the abdomen. When recommended, this procedure can easily be added to a routine spay/neuter or can be scheduled separately.
